The even growth rings show its grown fast then coppiced when the time was right (as the trees compete for light and air the growth rings get smaller). The stools have been cut low so the regeneration is from low down, and a big enough area was cut which makes all the trees grow back straight reaching for the light above.
It's a joy to cut, and work.
Unfortunately straight chestnut also makes good wood chip for biofuel.
Luckily our customers are discerning enough to know that using chestnut products is a fantastic way to store carbon, provide habitat for wildlife and stimulate the rural economy....See more
